How the brake servo works. Brake off - both sides of the diaphragm are under vacuum. Applying the brake lets air in behind the diaphragm, forcing it against the cylinder. Some cars have an indirect-acting servo fitted in the hydraulic lines between the master cylinder and the brakes.
