The 2 stroke is cheaper, lighter and has less engine braking, whereas the 4 stroke has more torque. There will be less periodic maintenance on the 2 stroke (no valve clearances to check, constant oil changes, etc).

IMHO you need at least 2 dirt bikes in your stable. A 200/250/300 2T for tight technical riding and a 350/450/500 4T for dual sport. You can get away with a 250/350 4T for all around but having 2+ bikes is always better.
