It needs at least six hours of sun to thrive, and grows in areas up to 8,500 feet in elevation. This grass turns green later in spring (April) and turns brown earlier in fall (late October) than a traditional lawn.
Blue grama can handle hot and dry sites. It can be used for low maintenance or alternative lawns. Infrequent mowing, monthly or as little as twice a year, can maintain grasses, but broadleaf weed control may be necessary until grasses are established.
