27 wrz 2023 · We used the data to compare Black and white imprisonment rates by state, finding that every state locks up Black people at a rate at least double that of white people — and, on average, at six times the rate of white residents: Every state incarcerates Black residents in its state prisons at a higher rate than white residents.

The following are the monthly summaries of inmate and supervisee populations in our facilities across the state.
In 2018, there were 30,936 people in the Virginia prison system. In Virginia, Black people constituted 20% of state residents, but 43% of people in jail and 53% of people in prison. Since 1980, the number of women in jail has increased 1,292%, and the number of women in prison has increased 1,047%. Incarceration is not only an urban phenomenon.
