The film starts in 1946, five years after the book was published. It tells the story of Alec Ramsey, a boy who is shipwrecked on a deserted island with a wild Arabian stallion that he befriends. After being rescued, they are set on entering a race challenging two champion horses.
Everything depends on the outcome of the big race at the film’s end. The young boy, of course, is the jockey (the Elizabeth Taylor role, so to speak). Ballard and Deschanel are still gifted at finding a special, epic look for the movie; one especially good scene has the stallion racing against time, in the dark before dawn, in the rain.
It was basically him and Ballard, the kid and the horse alone in Sardinia. Some of the shots are totally miraculous. I’m surprised no one got hurt filming this. They shot the entire ending of the movie first and then did the magical Sardinia footage after the ending was locked.
