In the first 24 hours after a blunt eye injury, blood may leak into the skin of the eyelid and surrounding areas, causing swelling and a bruise (contusion), commonly called a black eye. (See also Overview of Eye Injuries.)
Signs and symptoms of a black eye. Very soon after an eye injury, the eyelids and surrounding soft tissues begin to swell and turn a purplish-red to black color. A subconjunctival hemorrhage, or minor rupture in one of the blood vessels beneath the conjunctiva, can cause the white of the eye to turn bright red.
Pain, swelling, and bruising are the most common signs and symptoms of a black eye. Initially, the swelling and discoloration may be mild. The eye may start off slightly reddened, then progress to a darker shade. Later, the skin around the eye becomes deep violet, yellow, green, or black in color.
