Developed by the formidable Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Model 1886 might have had a short service life, but was the foundation for generations of later Austrian small arms, some of which are still in use today.
16 sty 2008 · Jan 16, 2008. #1. I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out with a little informaiton about a rifle that my Grandfather gave me. Is is marked: CE.W.F.G. STEYR and with an M. 1886. There is also a crown marking (all of these markings are on the left side of the receiver).
3 lis 2016 · Here we present an antique Austrian Steyr Model 1886 Kropatschek Rifle, made circa 1886 in Steyr, Austria. In the mid-1870s, an Austrian General, Alfred Ritter von Kropatschek began to develop a tubular magazine and cartridge lifter design in affiliation with Steyr Mannlicher.
While designed for black powder, the Kropatschek action proved to be strong enough to handle smokeless powder. Our example is an excellent condition long rifle version officially designated the Espingarda de Infantaria 8 mm m/1886: 8 mm Infantry Rifle. It is fitted with a 32.3" barrel and a full length 8 round tube magazine under the barrel.

Although designed for the black powder cartridge, it was later found that this sturdy rifle was capable of handling the newly developing smokeless powder cartridges.
