You can search and order New Zealand Government records for births, deaths and marriages (BDM) here. The historic data available for you to search is limited so that information relating to people who might still be alive, can be protected.
For births, deaths or marriages that occurred before the 100 year limit on historical births you can use the microfiche indexes that are available on the open shelves in the Family History Collection in the General Reading Room, which cover 1840–1990.
Ask family members and review any certificates or printouts you might already have. If you're looking for a marriage record, the death printout may give you useful clues, such as who the person was married to, the date of the marriage, where the marriage took place and the person's age at marriage.
