25 mar 2024 · The objectives of this systematic review were to analyze the long-term survival rates of the BIRMINGHAM HIP Resurfacing System (BHR), the cause of failures, and the functional outcomes at a follow-up of at least 10 years.
18 maj 2024 · Survivorship free of aseptic revision was 97.4% and survivorship free of any revision was 96.0% at 15 years. Revisions included 3 periprosthetic joint infections, 2 for elevated metal ions and symptomatic pseudotumor, 2 for aseptic femoral loosening, and 1 for unexplained pain.
What to expect - immediately after surgery. The operation to replace your hip takes approximately one hour. An oxygen mask over your mouth and nose helps your breathing.

The Birmingham hip replacement may have a very low failure rate at 8 years, approximately 1%. More recent data suggests that a slightly higher early failure rate may be present. It is thought that once the first 1-2 years have passed the risk of failure becomes very low.

Patients with a BHR should continue to be monitored.
