13 lip 2024 · However, in a bipolar hip arthroplasty, only the ball of the femur is replaced with a special implant called a bipolar prosthesis. The bipolar prosthesis itself is a two-part implant. It has a metal stem that fits into the hollow shaft of the femur and a smooth, articulating head.
The most commonly used prosthesis designs are the Austin Moore and Thompson prostheses. A composite of metal and high-density polyethylene that forms two interphases (bipolar prosthesis) can be used. The monopolar prosthesis has not been shown to offer any advantage over bipolar designs.

Use a trial bipolar or unipolar head prosthesis on the definitive stem to confirm appropriate diameter and neck length. The latter affects leg length, soft-tissue tension, and hip stability. With the hip reduced, confirm the range of motion and stability.
