For the Big Muddy mandolins we use the standard American 13-7/8″ scale. For the Big Muddy mandolas we use 15-1/2″. We also offer the violin scale which is about 13". It was the original mandolin scale of the Italian mandolins that mimicked the scale of violins.

Re: Exact scale length of standard big muddy mandolin? I agree with OP that I've never played a perfect intonation mandolin. Pops1 has it right slight imperfections can be adjusted by sanding existing saddle top, making it wider then thinning where individual string pairs rest moving where needed.
I want a Big Muddy (born and raised nearby) and am looking at 2 mutually exclusive modifications. Mike makes a jumbo (standard mando neck on mandola body) and offers violin scale on a standard mando. Given what I’d like to do, which option (if either) would the Cafe recommend?
I did try search and found some information, but none on the "violin scale" length. After some diligent digging on Google, I found this link to Big Muddy Mandolins. It has a complex table of model #'s, wood choices, and violin scale length instruments.
