  1. So, let’s find the world’s strongest wood. What I’ve done is taken each of the four tests of wood strength (Janka hardness, MOE, MOR, and crushing strength) and found which species were the best and worst in that category, and then use those values as the upper and lower limits.

  2. Our chart is based on the Janka Hardness Scale which is the industry standard for gauging the ability of various wood species to resist denting and tolerate normal wear. It also indicates the effort required to either nail or saw the particular wood species.

  3. The Janka scale is used to determine the relative hardness of particular domestic or exotic wood species. The Janka test measures the amount of force required to embed a 0.444" steel ball into the wood to half of its diameter.

  4. The table below provides laboratory values for several properties of wood that are associated with wood strength. Note that due to inadequacies of samples, these values may not necessarily represent average characteristics .

  6. Wood Species Data. Our sortable, filterable table will let you explore Elemental wood species by hardness, stiffness, strength and density.

  7. The table below provides laboratory-derived values for several mechanical properties of wood that are associated with wood strength. Note that due to sampling inadequacies, these values may not necessarily represent average species characteristics.
