The best Wizard build is pure Wizard, or 1 level dip. Adding Sorcerer metamagic can be fun. Wizards tend to excel as controllers more than blasters, but there are a few exceptions. Probably the strongest build is 1/11 Sorcerer Abjuration Wizard. Take white draconic sorcerer to gain Armour of Agathys. You get 5 temporary HP and enemies who hit you take 5 cold damage. Upcast it to increase by 5 for each level, for 30HP and 30 damage at level 6 spell.
