Boron trifluoride is a colorless gas which has a persistent, irritating, acidic odor and which hydrolyzes in moist air to form dense white fumes. It is shipped as a nonliquefied compressed gas at varying pressures up to 2000 psig (13 790 kPa).
The thermodynamics solvolysis constant of the BF 4 − ion in liquid anhydrous hydrogen fluoride was determined to be 7·7 × 10 −3 by a method of solubility measurements. From the extensive solvolysis of its salt, it was concluded, therefore, the BF 3 was not a strong acid in liquid HF.
23 lip 1999 · Liquid HF is a weak acid but the addition of BF 3 greatly increases the acidity of the solution. In order to gain insight into this phenomenon we have used density functional theory to investigate the clusters BF 3 + (HF) 1–7. We find that BF 3 + (HF) 1–3 are weakly bound Van der Waals complexes, as indicated by long intermolecular B–F distances.

Boron trifluoride readily absorbs water (3.22 g per 1 g water at 0°C and 1 atm) and forms various hydrates including the hemihydrate (BF 3∙0.5H 2O), monohydrate (BF 3∙H 2O), dihydrate (BF 3∙2H 2O) and even trihydrate (BF 3∙3H 2O) complexes.
