Street prices for opioids will generally be cheaper than prescription drug prices without insurance, although this may depend on the formulation, type of drug, and strength.
Street prices of diverted prescription opioids were computed (mean and median prices/mg) to make standardized price comparisons across drug classes. Street price trends were also examined.
Purchases in bulk were on average 10.51% cheaper than purchases not in bulk. Street buprenorphine in film form was on average 14.34% more expensive than in pill/tablet form. Buprenorphine street price was 17.12% higher in spring and 22.26% higher in summer compared to fall.
HIGHLIGHTS. Street prices per milligram for high- and low-potency opioids increased between April and December 2020 com-pared with the same period in 2019. High-potency opioids hydromorphone and oxymorphone had the highest prices per milligram among analgesics during 2020.

Although percentage changes on the log scale were notable and significant, they represent small absolute differences in mean price per milligram.

Results: Street prices of high-potency drugs hydromorphone and oxycodone increased 23% and 12% per milligram, respectively.
