Honestly the ECX AMP MT Kit, Tamiya TT-02s, and Traxxas Slash & Stampede 4x4 kits are good first time builds if you just want an RC to go play with. The Tamiya Lunch Box, Grasshopper, Blackfoot, Clodbuster, etc.

Something like the Egress, Top Force, Vanquish, Neo Fighter, etc are some of the best looking RC cars imo. If you are spending close to the $300 mark or higher on a Tamiya kit, you're better off with something like the Arrma Typhon or Senton. It will be far more durable than any Tamiya kit.
