IMHO the most convenient way is to play ISOS out of external SSD. That way the PS3 reads from both internal HDD (game data) and external drive and you get the fastest loading times. When PS3 has to read both disc image and game data out of internal HDD, loading times are longer.

Besides a SandForce SSD working well without TRIM, the SATA BUS in the PS3 is more than enough for a SSD to work. Peak, maximum throughput is not the most important feature of SSD. Their quick, nearly-instant access times are one of their best features.
