If you are uncertain, only use CurseForge, or any mod loader and use that to download mods. People suggest the overwolf launcher, but from what I've heard on this sub it's riddled with problems. I use GDLauncher myself to very easily download mods from curseforge.

The best place to find mods are www.minecraftforum.net or www.planetminecraft.com. They are where the original mod makers upload their mods for downloads. There are some other sites which you can download mods though this is the safest.
