I always try to make Wulfrum armor when I start a Calamity playthrough, although if you want to be really strong in early pre-hardmode you should rush the meteorite set, since you don't have to defeat any bosses for a meteorite to spawn before 1.4.
Boss checklist and recipe browser should give you a general guide. You can also use the class setups page on the Calamity wiki, but it's a little outdated. A good thing to do is to head to the ice biome and craft the snow ruffian armour.
