I just want a cheap laser to get some engravings done on metal (aluminum, stainless steel) every now and then. What is the cheapest laser engraver that is still reliable? What things do I have to worry/think about while operating said laser?
I think you are look at the S1 from xTools but you could also look at the M1, which offers interesting versatility combined with vinyl cutter, if you are into that. It's got a 10W laser, which is good enough for most jobs. Also, the F1, if you want portability and you are doing only small jobs.
If your primary goal is to engrave glass, I would recommend looking into CO2 or fiber laser. Wood is an organic material it can be done by any laser. Fiber is expensive so you are left with CO2. Consider your long-term goals and the range of projects you'd like to undertake when making your decision.
