The PS3 does not have a built in scaler like the xbox 360 does and very few ps3 games run at 1080p. Almost always 720p/1080i. I would reccomend a quality 720p plasma or a modern 1080p/4k tv that has a really good built in scaler. I would check rtings.com for current tvs and scaler ratings.

If you are using a 55” FHD TV and want to upgrade to an UHD TV you should go way up to 85” with the new TV so it wouldn’t look worse from the same viewing distance, but keep in mind PS3 was not designed for 4K videogaming. Sitting too far from your TV makes it harder to make out details.
