If you are new to FFXI entirely, keep in mind that the game was released in 2002, during a time when MMORPG design tended towards extreme complexity and "grindiness" with sparse information disseminated via rumor in online message boards.

From these sources, the back-end (server-side) code is provided for the different content and expansion packs of FFXI on private servers. Do you have any experience with coding and running web server? If so you'll be quite familiar with the requirements to run your own FFXI server.
