I made a tier-list for all the DDR versions! I still think 3rd Mix was by far the best of the PS1-era games. Great songs, the first 9 footers were amazing, and we are running to the railroad track, run along with Captain Jack... I still maintain that 4th Mix PLUS was the best arcade instalment of all time.
the best game to use with flat screen (LCD would be ideal) is the wii's Dance Dance Revolution II. it was the last console release with the LCD panels in mind when it was released. the main song group was a mix of DDR X2/DDR X3.

I've found that to be a helpful way for me to decide which ones I want and which ones I can skip. Aside from looking online, you can also skim Craigslist for pads. I got my metal DDR Game pad from an ad there, and my only beef is that I can't get it to work with Stepmania for the PC.
I'd highly recommend you get Japanese Extreme (Its a combination of Extreme 2 and SuperNOVA) But the best are by far Extreme 2, SuperNOVA, MAX and Extreme they have that classical DDR...
