Even if you’ve never seen a mouse and keyboard in your life and only played on controllers, you’ll do much better with the keyboard and mouse. Rust on console is reworked to be played with a controller, Rust on PC is not.
The consensus is an Xbox controller is best fit for PC because of the native support. PS4 also works for PC but it has sub-optimal support. If you need to use it for non-steam games then you need extra software to make it work (DS4Windows) a lot of people use it with no issue so definitely a valid option.
