The BD-5 has a small, streamlined fuselage holding its semi-reclined pilot under a large canopy, with the engine installed in a compartment in the middle of the fuselage, and a propeller-driving engine - or jet engine in the BD-5J variant - mounted immediately to the rear of the cockpit.
The BD-5 is a single-seat homebuilt aircraft, designed and produced by Bede Aircraft in the 1970s. The BD-5J is a variant of the BD-5 that features a jet engine in place of the original piston engine.
The variant BD-5J is powered by a small Microturbo TRS 18 turbojet engine with 1.45 kN (326 lbs) thrust which makes it the world?s smallest jet aircraft. It can fly approx. 260 kts (483 km/h - 300 mph).
The BD-5 was used in the movie with James Bond called “Octopussy”. The aircraft was available with two different size wings. The BD-5A had a wingspan of 14 ½ feet and the BD-5 B had a wingspan of 21 feet. The BD-5J, the jet model of the aircraft, had a wingspan of 17 feet.
