You can right-click on a file and choose Open with Adobe Reader (or similar command), but otherwise Word will assume it is the default application.

It would seem that the default file association for the .PDF filetype has been changed from Adobe to Word. This is fairly easy to reinstate. Reset Adobe Reader for .PDFs.
