The Battle of Sitka (Russian: Сражение при Ситке; 1804) was the last major armed conflict between Russians and Alaska Natives, and was initiated in response to the destruction of a Russian trading post two years before.

Baranov responded by gathering naval forces and an army of about 700 Aleut warriors to attack Katlian's new fort on Sitka at Indian River. He intended to push the Tlingit off Sitka Island temporarily in order to build a new Russian fort at the most strategic site on Sitka Sound.

In 1804, the Russians returned to Sitka and attacked the Kiksadi fort on Indian River. Although they lost the battle, the Natives were forced to flee and the Russians re-established their trading post. Share this!

While skirmishes and attacks on both sides continued around Sitka Sound for another 17 years, the Russians did not leave their fortified stronghold in Sitka until they ceded their interest in Alaska to the United States in 1867.
