Virginia City Historic District is a National Historic Landmark District encompassing the former mining villages of Virginia City and Gold Hill, both in Storey County, as well as Dayton and Silver City, both to the south in adjacent Lyon County, Nevada, United States.

The 19th-century mining bonanza that turned Virginia City into the most important industrial city between Denver and San Francisco, was the result of the Comstock Lode. A rich deposit of silver ore discovered by Henry Comstock, part-owner of the property on which it was discovered, in June 1859.
9 gru 2004 · A huge celebration was held in Virginia City on Oct. 20,1900, when the town finally got wired. Fittingly a big banquet was held at the International Hotel marking the occasion. By 1914 the glory days of the great Comstock Lode were a distant memory of over three decades.

The photo below shows Virginia City during its peak years of the mid-1870s. The Savage Mine is flanked by the expanding works of the Hale and Norcross mines. As the mines became ever deeper and hoisting became a difficult and expensive operation, these three mines combined efforts to construct the Combination shaft.
