SET INTERSECTION, SET UNION, SET COMPLEMENT: SUMMARY. The intersection of two sets denotes the elements that the sets have in common, or the "overlap" of the two sets. S ∩ T = {x|x∈ S and x∈ T}. The union of two sets merges the two sets into one "larger" set. S ∪ T = {x|x ∈ S or x ∈ T}.
Three important binary set operations are the union (U), intersection (∩), and cross product (x). A binary operation is called commutative if the order of the things it operates on doesn’t matter.
