Great Britain Baseball History. The United Kingdom is credited with winning the inaugural Baseball World Cup (BWC) in 1938, beating the United States by four games to one in an international series (the Amateur World Series) hosted in England.
For the 1869 season the NABBP, in an effort to take the corrupting money out of the amateur game, permitted the formation of professional teams. This move, however, backfired, as the pro game exploded in popularity and amateur club baseball quickly died out.
Baseball has a long history in Britain. Literary references to it can be found in the eighteenth century and even earlier.2 However, the name seems to have faded from use, and by the early nineteenth century “rounders” had become a popular bat-and-ball game, especially among children.
