I have 3 year old tablets and TVs that support hardware decoding of AV1, and 2 year old GPUs that support encoding. Today I encoded a 270MB x264 video to a 4.7MB AV1 video with no noticeable difference. Android, Linux, TVs, and even older Android tablets with software decoding play it fine. IPhone plebs are left with nothing but errors.
