15 paź 2024 · Highlights. The U.S. prison population was 1,230,100 at yearend 2022, a 2% increase from yearend 2021 (1,205,100). The number of females in state or federal prison increased almost 5% from yearend 2021 (83,700) to yearend 2022 (87,800).
From 2021 to 2022, the number of white persons in the correctional population decreased by 99,000 (4%), while the number of Hispanic persons increased by 31,000 (4%), the number of black persons increased by 20,000 (1%), and the number of persons of all other racial groups increased by 8,000 (3%).
The United States has about 437 prisoners per 100,000 people as of the end of 2019, a 2.6% drop from 2018. As of 2018, the imprisonment rate of black males was 5.8 times greater than that of white males, and the imprisonment rate of black females was 1.8 times greater than that of white females.
