With this weird named but straightforward mod, you can double any item in your main-hand as simply as pressing a button (configurable in Misc section, default is =). It works even when cheats are disabled. It works with both blocks and items, modded or not, and keeps their NBT data.
You get 1 string every 3 placed+broken. It's not more efficient than a spider farm or even a mob grinder with spiders, and it's still manual, but it's very simple (though the design could be improved, maybe a lot) and gives you infinite strings from only 3.
