Contrary to the stereotype that suggests Asians have uniformly small eyes, the truth is that Asian eye shapes span a broad spectrum, showcasing a rich tapestry of genetic and environmental influences.
The shape is caused by the epicanthic fold, which is a fold over the inside corner of the eye. Asians aren't the only ones to have it, though, it's not unheard of among Europeans, especially the Irish and Scottish. Some Amerind tribes have them, too.
The main difference in eye shape is the way the upper eyelid meets the inner corner of the eye. In many ethnicities, including East Asians, Southeast Asians, Polynesians and Native Americans, there is commonly a slight fold at this point, called an ‘epicanthic fold’.
