The book uses the cheap "perfect" binding. This edition drops the merit badge requirements; it includes only the requirements for the 14 badges required for Eagle Scout (it has color drawings of the other merit badges). The book's artwork is excellent.

Since its first edition, the Boy Scout Handbook was published to be the primary reference for scouts. It was used by scouts at a time when the internet was not available and included practical information a scout needed. It also was designed as a moral compass.
The Scout is wearing a red neckerchief as usual, overseas cap, and leggings (for many years in the '50s and '60s, the BSA promoted leggings through their artwork, though these were seldom worn by Scouts outside of the handbooks and catalogs).

The cover depicted a Scout in a brilliant red neckerchief and campaign hat with profiles of American heroes set in deep blue behind him.
