The word 'Urdu' was at first used as an alternative name for the city of Delhi, and during the time of Akbar could signify any royal city. It did not simply mean 'army camp', as those who wish to imply that Urdu was somehow a language imposed by the invading Muslim armies, sometimes point out in their arguments against Urdu.
