Three species of rhino—black, Javan, and Sumatran—are critically endangered. Today, a small population of Javan rhinos is found in only one national park on the northern tip of the Indonesian island of Java. A mainland subspecies of the Javan rhino was declared extinct in Vietnam in 2011.

The white rhino is now classified as near threatened, while the greater one-horned rhino has moved from endangered to vulnerable. However, they remain at real risk from poaching, which has seen a a dramatic increase since 2008.
Are rhinos endangered? According to the IUCN, Javan, Sumatran, and black rhinos are critically endangered, greater one-horned rhinos are vulnerable, and white rhinos are near threatened. The primary threat faced by all five species of rhinoceros is poaching and illegal trade of their horns. However, habit loss and fragmentation are also threats.
The Sumatran, Javan and Black rhinos are listed as ‘critically endangered’ by the IUCN - there are thought to be fewer than 70 Javan rhinos and between 34-47 Sumatran rhinos left, which makes them truly under threat of extinction in the wild.
