Tax law is complex and sometimes mistakes are made. As tax preparers, VITA staff often end up in the position of breaking the bad news and making the apology. The important things are that we say we're sorry and make things right. Speaking of foul-ups, here's one of my all-time favorites.
Be specific: Clearly describe the mistake and show that you understand its impact on others. Avoid uncertainty and vagueness. Offer a solution: Where possible, propose a way you can correct the mistake or make amends for the situation. This shows commitment and sincerity.
