Cave Johnson first appeared by a username and password scrawled in one of the Rattmann's dens during Portal, and was fleshed out and provided with additional details during the Portal ARG.
To say it bluntly : Aperture Science should not have been permitted to continue, and was broke as hell. But it's still there, self-efficient and autonomous, and continue to do science the worst way possible thanks to an ex-secretary turned psycho AI.
