Magic Pen Cho does like 900 true damage per Q at full build and still had 4500hp with 10 stacks. You can do great damage and still be tanky (assuming they don’t have tank busters)
Tank is the OG Cho'gath, good against melee, decent against ranged (only if you get Approach Velocity in secondary rune). Approach Velocity is vital for Cho'gath since he is extremely immobile and you can easily ganks by hitting the toplaner and jungler with Q.
Overall: the AP build is a bit more consistent, but has lower payoff. Cho'Gath's strength is generating a buttload of free max health, and resistances are generally speaking the best thing that scales with health. So building tank is a build more towards exploiting Cho'Gath's strengths.
I always enjoyed Cho'Gath and particularly AP Cho'Gath, but with new items and runes tank Cho'Gath also became good top while AP is nice mid. I see my guide as the best out there as I have my own take on the items, I'm currently the only new updated guide with rod of ages as I like to have something unique but still good in my guides.
