TFRs in the NAS The term “TFR” is used generically to describe various types of restric-tions within the national airspace sys-tem. However, it should be noted there are actually eight types of TFRs used throughout the NAS. Under-standing the reasons for each is help-ful in alerting pilots to the possibility of
interpretation by those seeking to create TFRs. The FAA should work with industry to develop implementation guidelines for congressional language on new TFRs in order to avoid creating a patchwork of TFRs across the country that could have a negative impact on aviation.
Long-term TFRs should be charted on Sectional and Terminal Area Charts. The FAA does not have standardized criteria for determining when a TFR should be depicted on a Sectional or Terminal Area Chart.
