The DASS is a 42-item questionnaire which includes three self-report scales designed to measure the negative emotional states of depression, anxiety and stress. Each of the three scales contains 14 items, divided into subscales of 2-5 items with similar content.

Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS21) This Questionnaire is a short version (21 item) of a 42-item self report instrument designed to measure three related negative emotional states: depression, anxiety and tension/stress.

The DASS is a 42 item self-report inventory that yields 3 factors: Depression; Anxiety; and Stress. This measure proposes that physical anxiety (fear symptomatology) and mental stress (nervous tension and nervous energy) factor-out as two distinct domains.
16 – 25 MODERATE level of anxiety symptoms reported. 26 – 63 SEVERE level of anxiety symptoms reported. A high score does not necessarily indicate that a person has an anxiety disorder, but indicates that a more detailed and individualized evaluation should be performed. 1990 Aaron T. Beck.
