Introduction. The relationship between the Pacific walrus (Odo-benus rosmarus divergens) and its prey populations was estimated within the species range (Fay et al., 1977). However, the study was based largely on benthic fauna, and little is known about the food requirements of walruses.
Here, we describe fecal bacterial and macroparasite communities and assess correlations with diet trophic level in Pacific walruses harvested during subsistence hunts by members of the Native Villages of Gambell and Savoonga on St Lawrence Island, Alaska.
ABSTRACT: North Pacific foragers have relied upon the Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) for subsistence and raw materials for at least three thousand years. Zooarchaeological evidence indicates that the pattern and intensity of use differ significantly between Alaska, St. Lawrence Island, and the Chukchi coast.
