There are three planes commonly referred to in anatomy and medicine, as illustrated in Figure 1.4.3. The sagittal plane divides the body or an organ vertically into right and left sides. If this vertical plane runs directly down the middle of the body, it is called the midsagittal or median plane.
Anatomical Planes in a Human: There are three basic planes in zoological anatomy: sagittal, coronal, and transverse. A human in the anatomical position, can be described using a coordinate system with the Z-axis going from front to back, the X-axis going from left to right, and the Y-axis going from up to down.

In the anatomical position, we always consider the person as standing upright, looking forward, with arms to the side, palms facing forward, and thumbs pointing away from the body. The feet are slightly apart and parallel to each other with the toes pointing forward.
