I was able to select a seat that was blue with a * that said for status members. I have a AA account but def don't have any thing like gold status with them. Will I be moved to another seat or something or will I be fine since the system let me select that seat without paying anything.
it depends on how you booked it. If you bought economy class or higher, he would have picked the seats at the time of booking. If you bought the basic economy, or whatever american airlines equivalent is, your seats will be assigned at check in after everyone who paid for it has picked their seats.
People with status can select red or green for free (pending on the time before the flight for lower status). There isn't really some algorithm that you can game to get the best seats...just pick one and if you care keep checking the app until you fly.
