The alveolar process (/ ælˈviːələr, ˌælviˈoʊlər, ˈælviələr /) [1] is the portion of bone containing the tooth sockets on the jaw bones (in humans, the maxilla and the mandible). The alveolar process is covered by gums within the mouth, terminating roughly along the line of the mandibular canal.
The alveolar bone is composed of the ridges of the jaw that support the teeth. The roots of the teeth are contained in deep depressions, the alveolar sockets in the bone. The alveolar bone develops during tooth eruption and undergoes atrophy with tooth loss. It responds readily to external and systemic influences.
