Yiddish is written with the Hebrew alphabet. As Yiddish developed into a written language during the Middle Ages, use of the Hebrew alphabet was extended from Hebrew and Aramaic, the languages of Jewish tradition, to Yiddish. The alphabet is used more or less phonetically.
