Algiers (/ æ l ˈ dʒ ɪər z /) is a historic neighborhood of New Orleans and is the only Orleans Parish community located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River. Algiers is known as the 15th Ward, one of the 17 Wards of New Orleans. [1] It was once home to many jazz musicians [2] [3] and is also the second oldest neighborhood in the city. [4]
Algiers Point is a location on the Lower Mississippi River in New Orleans, Louisiana. In river pilotage, Algiers Point is one of the many points of land around which the river flows—albeit a significant one. Since the 1970s, the name Algiers Point has also referred to the neighborhood in the immediate vicinity of that point. [citation needed] .
Built up along the Riverfront in 1719, Algiers is New Orleans’ 2nd oldest neighborhood, home to 4-5 generations of local families and rich with history dating back to the colonial period. Victorian cottages, gingerbread woodwork and urban community parks give the Algiers neighborhood its laid-back, village-like atmosphere.
Various areas of the modern city which were separate towns in the past, such as Algiers and Carrollton, continue to be spoken of – but now as neighborhoods.
