Alendronate is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis (thinning of the bone) in women after menopause. This medicine may also be used to increase bone mass in men who have osteoporosis, and in men and women to prevent and treat osteoporosis caused by long-term use of corticosteroids (cortisone-like medicine).

Alendronic acid is good for your bones – it makes them stronger and less likely to break. You'll usually take it as a tablet or liquid, once a week. Take alendronic acid first thing in the morning, before you have anything to eat or drink and before you take any other medicines.
