Checked baggage fees are lowest during initial flight booking. You can pre-book later via your airasia member account or during web check-in at the normal rate. The fees at the airport are highest, so pre-book your checked baggage allowance in advance.

Flying from Oz to Malaysia. I've done the trip several times and have often seen people taking guitars onboard and stowing them in the overhead locker. The Air Asia website indicates I need to buy a seat for it and the guy on the online chat said the same.
